What's the deal with the Sprint/Nextel Merger?

Does anyone have any info on the merger between Nextel and Sprint?

Will they be combining the 2 networks together?

What about phones and phone numbers?

Re: What's the deal with the Sprint/Nextel Merger?

The Networks are incompatible at this time. Nextel uses TDMA with the iDEN Network, and Sprint uses CDMA for their PCS network.. I have heard that there is a dual mode phone in prototype status at this time.

I sure hope it works great. I don't want to lose the great iDEN network, so I hope a hybrid network will be strong.

Re: What's the deal with the Sprint/Nextel Merger?

I think the merger was done at the wrong time. I know Nextel wanted into a bigger market and Sprint had a large share, but come on their systems were not even close.

Re: What's the deal with the Sprint/Nextel Merger?

Correct, they are currently working on merging the iDEN network and Sprint's network into a hybrid. They will use Nextel's iDEN Direct Connect technology and Sprint's CDMA for cellular.

Thumbs up Re: What's the deal with the Sprint/Nextel Merger?

As an employee , I can tell you this , sprint and nextel merged september 2005, one company bank account , 2 seperate divisions and networks. The hybrid phone is now out has been for about a month. It just not in every market though . When it is turned on it search's for cdma towers first , then if it can't connect it goes to iden network tower . This all happens in a matter of seconds so the client will not notice any difference in there service except more areas of good signal. And Nextel is actually primarily owned by IBM which inturn has a business partnership deal with Motorolla and they all share the patten rights and cash flow .Sprint buys in to help much needed cash flow to open up network towers .If yah play the stocks go IBM cause the hybrid is going to make them worth more.

Re: What's the deal with the Sprint/Nextel Merger?

my friends mom works for nextel so i get pretty good info about the future of the nextel/sprint merger... they happen to be closing down one of the warehouses here in texas in december, so im gonna miss selling 930's for $200. But anyway trust me when i say ive seen the new hybrid theyre releasing and its well worth it.
